In his book Foucault’s Pendulum, Umberto Eco wrote, “I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”
This observation rings so true to me. Although my own father was more the strong silent type, his actions certainly made an impact on me — especially his love and compassion for all animals and his appreciation for how much dogs (and cats) enhance our lives. (The photo to the right is of him and one of his inquisitive kitties, George). So, in honor of Father’s Day, we’d like to pay tribute to all the dog dads out there.
When I asked my husband about his favorite things to do with our own inquisitive canine, Ringo, his answers were simple, yet filled with joy: playing ball, going for walks, snuggling in bed, watching sports, running errands, going out for meals (especially as a family), and taking him to training classes. (And training at home, as seen below teaching Ringo how to use the doggy door). It’s the every day things that make life enjoyable for this doggy-daddy duo – and often act as reminders that we can learn a lot from our canine companions.
Going beyond my own household, I then reached out to my Academy for Dog Trainers colleagues, and found that their answers were very similar — as you can see by all the photos, capturing moments of dogs and their dads. It appears that not only do dogs enhance these guys’ lives, but they also illustrate an important life lesson: it’s the simple things in life that make things more exciting and fulfilling. A walk in the park, sitting alongside a stream and watching the sunset, enjoying a meal, and taking a much-deserved nap.

On behalf of the folks here at IC HQ’s, we wish all the dog dads and their inquisitive canines lots of fun, adventure, and plenty of teachable moments.
